TACMON - Interactive Graphical Tactile Display
In the context of the Research and Development Activities of CYBERALL-ACCESS, our organization has assigned along with 12 more companies and associations from Europe to four widely known research institutes in Europe, Centre Suisse d’ Electronique et de Microtechnique, University of Glasgow (Human Computer Interaction Research Group), Centre de Recerca I Investigacio de Catalynya, and Feltalaloi es Kutato Kozpont Szolgaltato the development of an interactive graphical tactile display and user interface for people with sight loss by exploiting polymer Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS).
In general, tactile display devices available in the market are too bulky and expensive. Similar limitations are noted for technologies using servomotors to provide shape information. This initiative aims to develop within 3 years a tactile display with a fine matrix of electronically refreshable tactile dots making electronic textual and graphically-oriented information accessible for the human touch sense on a dynamically reusable surface.
The prototype tactile display will convey Braille text, scanned illustrations, map outlines or other graphical images to the fingertips, while allowing at the same time, tactile input on the same surface for interactive control and navigation. The prototype interactive graphical tactile display can be used also as a user interface device for PCs for providing wider access to the Internet as well as to HTML based e-learning tools for people with sight loss.
